Red Phalarope, Fox & Pileated

This morning Pete got up early to go to Kent pond up by Killington to see if the Red Phalarope's were still there. They summer in the tunda way up above the Arctic Circle and migrate out over the Oceans. With this swirling weather pattern that has been stuck over us, they have been blown off course and sighted in Mass, New Hampshire and fortunately for us, right here in VT!! There were more, but today there were only one pair and Pete got some pictures for you to look at since we probably won't be seeing them in person once they leave.

The pictures are of the male we found out as the female has a bright white spot on her head from her eyes back. The female got scared off at one point by loud squaking as only the Pileated can do, so off he went to find the Woodpecker, and did!

On our way back yesterdsay we got to see a fox carrying food back to the kits, it was soaked poor thing, but it still had lunch .

Enjoy!!

Rainy Day Photos Part 3

Well, the birds in the yard loved the new brush(blind) which makes the job of taking pictures of them much easier! Because of the bad weather some birds are landing in any port in the storm, we too have had a couple of exciting visitors to our yard. We had Indigo Buntings, a Yellow Throat Warbler, Black & White Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Baltimore Orioles, Rose-Breasted and Evening Grosbeaks, Cardinals, Tufted Titmice, White Throated Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Chickadee's, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, Yellow-Bellied Sap Suckers, and Robins. With all this clamoring the Mallard Duck brought her 12 new babies by for a picture, ah the magic!!

Enjoy!

More Rainy Day Pictures Part 2

Hi Again,

Here are some more of our back yard birds for your enjoyment. Take a minute and think of the joy spring brings to us each year.
Our Blog only allows us 4 sometimes 5 photo per post, so it will take about 5 parts to show you all the photos we took of the birds. All these photos were taken through our east facing window, where I set up a blind. Check out Rich Ennis site, he gave me the idea of the blind. So I cut some brush an set it in the ground about 10 ft from the east window for the birds to land on, then waited. The results have been huge fun for us, and we have gotten some pretty good shots if we do say so ourselves :)

May 13, 2006 Rainy Day News

Rainy Day News

It seems we get spring for a day, summer for two days and now we are back to mud season again, very confusing time. I'm happy to report that all of our part time resident birds are back safe and sound and we have 6 baby Geese from our favorite pair of Geese!! What a magical time of year it is. We have been Photographing all the birds in our backyard from inside the house during all this rain, and we thought we would share some of the photos and events with you.

Even in the worst weather there is still much joy. Our Rose-breasted Grosbeaks from last year who fledged 4 babies are back and apparently brought the kids back as well . We now have 6 males and some of them are immatures. We have only counted 3 females so far, but that's enough for quite a tribe to be. We have 2 pair of evening Grosbeaks joining our feeder group, so we'll get to see those babies too, hopefully. We have a resident pair of Cardinals, Yellow bellied sap suckers, tufted titmice, too many Gold finches to count, and probably 10 purple finches. Our Hummingbird returned two days ago and I think now all our migrators are back with us, plus a few who have adopted us. It appears we will have an abundant nursery season and I of course can't wait, love the creatures!!

So stay dry, or get wet, either is fun, but take a minute to feed the birds and watch as natures magic unfolds right before your eyes. There is always something to smile about when you watch the babies of spring. This is part one of five, so more pictures are on the way!!

Enjoy,
Carol & Pete
